Reading Around
The World
In an effort to
increase independent reading in grades 6-8, New Egypt Middle School is very
pleased to announce our 2009-2010 Reading Incentive Program, sponsored by The
New Egypt Middle School Student Council called, “Reading Around the World.”
Guidelines and Procedures:
-
The program
will officially begin on October 6th and end on April 26th.
-
Students
will visit two countries each month (12 countries total) by reading
independently for 20 minutes a day Monday through Friday at home.
-
Each
student will receive a reading log (passport) every two weeks from their
homeroom teachers.
-
Homeroom
teachers will collect completed passports and submit them to the main office
on the assigned date.
-
Parents are
asked to sign their child’s passports to verify completion before
submission.
Incentives:
The names of 3 students who
participate (1 in each grade level) will be drawn every two weeks to
receive a $25 gift card from various businesses:
-
Game Stop
-
Barnes and Noble
-
I-Tunes
-
Etc.
Every student who
participates throughout the program will have a chance to win the Grand Prize:
A Notebook Computer!
On April 26th each
student who has submitted all 12 passports throughout the entire program
will receive triple the chance to win by submitting their names 3 times
for each reading log they return!
End of
the Program Celebration:
To celebrate the success and
completion of the program New Egypt Middle School is hoping to have a Hot Air
Balloon Company provide a demonstration while lifting up selected staff members
in May!!
Research has shown a direct
correlation between reading and improved vocabulary and writing skills,
increased comprehension, higher standardized test scores, greater global
awareness and overall academic achievement.
Reading incentive programs are
most effective and successful when parents become involved. Please help support
the “Reading Around the World,” Reading Incentive Program by helping your child
set aside time for them to read independently. We are very excited about this
program and look forward to getting started!
Thank you for your cooperation,
Andrea L. Caldes,
Principal
